WHERE WE SURF

Cox Bay

Cox Bay is easily one of the most consistent beaches in the Tofino area. Its direct west exposure to the open Pacific Ocean means there is literally always a wave to surf, and its crescent shape provides multiple peaks to choose from. On small days, it is a dream learner wave and very popular location for beginner surf lessons, courtesy of the beach's very gradual drop off. On bigger days, the bay provides long, pointbreak style walls in the middle and wedgy peaks off the point depending on the sand bars.

Not sure how to get there? Please refer to the video and information below:

How to get to Cox Bay from Outside Break (Live To Surf, Tacofino, etc.)

  • Turn left (South) on Pacific Rim Highway.

  • Drive for 4km.

  • Turn right onto Maltby Road (Same road for Surf Grove camping).

  • If you drive into the Pacific Rim National Park you have gone too far.

North Chesterman

North Chesterman Beach faces the same westerly direction as Cox Bay, but is more sheltered by various islands and reefs. This makes it a great backup option if Cox or any of the other exposed beaches are too big for your current skill level or if it simply impossible to paddle out anywhere else. A lot of shortboarders prefer this beach as it gets bigger since it is a steeper beach than Cox; giving the wave a bit more punch. That being said, it can still be a great beginner spot on smaller days as the beach is still relatively gradual compared to many other breaks in the world.

South Chesterman

South Chesterman is a south facing beach, which makes it a great option when the wind is coming from the west to northwest as Cox and North will be onshore and messy while South is clean. As with the other locations, it is a great learner wave when small, but can also get quite fun for experienced surfers when we get a south swell pulse producing wedgy lefts up and down the beach.
